Location & Travel Information
Welcome to South Africa! The conference will take place at Skukuza in the world-renowned Kruger National Park, offering delegates a unique opportunity to engage with river science in one of Africa’s most remarkable natural landscapes.
We recommend that international delegates plan their travel well in advance, particularly flights to Skukuza, accommodation and entry requirements for South Africa.
Staying in Kruger National Park
Skukuza Safari Lodge is a major rest camp and visitor hub within Kruger National Park on the Sabie River. Delegates should review the accommodation options associated with the conference and book early, as availability in the park may be limited. Please check the conference website for accommodation arrangements, booking instructions and any recommended alternatives outside the park.

Getting to Skukuza - International Flights
Most international visitors will arrive in South Africa through one of the country’s major international airports:
• O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) Johannesburg – a major international gateway, with onward flights to Skukuza.
• Cape Town International Airport (CPT) – another international gateway, with flights to Skukuza available on selected schedules.
When booking your international flights, allow sufficient time to clear immigration, collect baggage and connect with your onward flight. If your flights are booked separately, consider allowing extra time in case of delays.
Transfers and Road Travel
Delegates travelling by road should plan their route carefully and allow sufficient time to reach Skukuza before the park gates close. The recommended access route for Skukuza is generally via Paul Kruger Gate, near Hazyview.
Road transfers from airports outside the park can take several hours. We recommend arranging transfers in advance and checking the latest access information with SANParks before travelling.
Conference transfer information: Details of any organised airport transfers or shuttle services will be announced by the conference organisers
Entry requirements for South Africa
International delegates are responsible for ensuring that they meet South Africa’s immigration and entry requirements.
Before travelling, please:
• Check whether your nationality requires a visitor visa or other travel authorisation.
• Ensure that your passport is valid for your intended travel.
• Apply for any required visa or travel authorisation well in advance.
• Check whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required based on your travel itinerary, including transit through countries where yellow fever risk applies.
Requirements can change, so consult the official South African Government visa information and the relevant South African diplomatic mission before departure.
Weather and what to pack
August is winter in South Africa and falls within the dry season in the Kruger region. Days are often sunny and mild to warm, while early mornings and evenings can be cold.
We recommend packing:
• Warm clothing for early mornings and evenings.
• Comfortable walking shoes and suitable outdoor clothing.
• Sun protection, including a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
• Binoculars or a camera if you wish to enjoy the surrounding wildlife.
• Any personal medication and essential travel documents.
Extend Your Stay in South Africa
Make the most of your visit by extending your stay after the conference and exploring South Africa’s remarkable landscapes, wildlife and cultural attractions. From a safari in Kruger National Park to the scenic Panorama Route, Cape Town and the Garden Route, there are plenty of opportunities to experience more of the country.
August is a popular time to visit, and accommodation and travel arrangements can fill up quickly. International delegates are encouraged to book any additional accommodation, flights, safaris and tours well in advance, particularly if travelling during or immediately after the conference.
We look forward to welcoming you to South Africa and hope you have the opportunity to discover more of what the country has to offer!
